History

Founded in 1992, Kütahya Dumlupınar University takes its name from the Dumlupınar Victory, which was won during the Turkish War of Independence. The Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching was established on April 14, 1994, under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and began admitting students in the 1994–1995 academic year.

In April 1999, pursuant to the Council of Ministers Decision No. 99/12628, the School of Physical Education and Sports was established within the university, and the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching was affiliated with this new school. Since the 1999–2000 academic year, educational activities have continued under this new structure.

According to List I of the Presidential Decree No. 2504 on the Establishment of the Institutes and Faculties Specified in Annexed List I and the Closure of the Institutes and Schools Specified in Annexed List II, published in the Official Gazette dated May 9, 2020, the Faculty of Sport Sciences was established within Kütahya Dumlupınar University.

The Department of Physical Education and Sports, operating under the Faculty of Sport Sciences, trains qualified physical education and sports teachers, which are greatly needed in the field of sports in Türkiye. Graduates may work in preschools, primary and secondary education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, in the central and provincial organizations of the Directorate of Youth and Sports, in the education and implementation of sports activities for individuals with disabilities, and in the organization and implementation of activities promoting healthy living within society.

The curriculum includes courses and practical applications in the fields of General Culture, Sports Field Knowledge, and Professional Teaching Knowledge.
